Is Your Homepage Costing You Sales?

8 Common Homepage Mistakes (and How to Fix Them Fast)

Your homepage is your storefront. For many brands, it’s the main entrance. Up to 50% of your traffic may land there first. If it’s not pulling its weight, you’re losing sales before customers even browse.

After speaking with over 100 Shopify store owners, we saw the same mistakes: small things that quietly hurt conversions, trust, and first impressions.

Here are 7 of the most common homepage mistakes we repeatedly see in brands making less than $10K per month.

🛑 Weak Calls to Action
No clear “Buy Now” or “Shop the Collection”? Customers get confused and leave.
Fix it: Make buttons bold, high contrast, and tell people exactly what to do.

🧭 Confusing Navigation
A cluttered menu is like a broken GPS. If shoppers can’t find their way, they bounce.
Fix it: Keep your menu clean. Organize categories using straightforward words. Menus are not the place to get creative.

🎯 Visual Clutter
Low-quality photos, messy banners, busy layouts. It’s a trust killer.
Fix it: Use clean design and strong visuals. Credibility starts with how you look.

🖼️ Wasted Hero Section
A nice image without a message or CTA is a missed opportunity.
Fix it: Use that space to say what you do and guide visitors with a clear call to action.

🛍️ No Products or Featured Collections
If no products or collections are shown, it’s not clear this is even a store.
Fix it: Add featured collections or bestsellers to your homepage. Make it obvious that visitors can shop and show them where to start.

💬 Generic Copywriting
If your homepage says things like “Shop Popular Categories” or “Welcome to Our Store,” you’re blending in, not standing out.
Fix it: Add your brand voice. Tell an actual story. And use Chat GPT with caution.

🔒 No Trust Elements
No reviews. No badges. No proof it’s safe to buy.
Fix it: Add social proof, secure checkout icons, press, and money-back guarantees. Home pages need at least one trust element.

📖 No Brand Story
If shoppers don’t understand who you are, you’re forgettable. And yes, you probably have an About page. But let’s be honest, most people don’t read it.
Fix it:
Tell a little about your brand right on the homepage. Who you are, what you stand for, and why you exist. Use the main banner or a short, rich text in the first fold.
